Parallel 03:28
I can’t control I can’t explain The thoughts you burn Into my brain You wanted life You loved to laugh Now write it on Your Epitaph You never did I gave my best I tried for you You paid me less Than half my due What can I say What can you do I’m needing more And that’s the truth You never did Oh but it’s like I can’t stop it Can’t pretend I didn’t want it to ever end like this But you never did You never did
2.
Somehow 03:35
Somehow It’s the only thing That matters now You’re out When you know it’s good Blinded every time Who could read your mind I tried to divine The mystery of the night I miss your eyes Somehow It’s the only thing that matters now You’re out When you know it’s good Such a lonely sight Let’s go take a drive Down the ocean side Swim in starry skies All night Somehow It’s the only thing That matters now You’re out When you know it’s good You’re not looking back Not pushing past Not looking at Just turning out Somehow It’s the only thing That matters now You’re out When you know it’s good

24 03:55
I wake up and taste the sun outside Watch the desert Fears to hide Or drown, or fight, or feel, or hate, or say, or do, or hear Are we up? Know what’s recommended Hit the pavement Sparks contended But I’m not sure that I’m who I was before Just fake it You’ll make it I know what to say I trusted you But I can’t see it written in the sky I go out and it’s still dark outside Hit the pavement Fears to hide Or cry, or fight, or feel, or see, or say, or do, or hear Are we up? Know what’s recommended Think I’ll sink but I can’t prevent it Cause I’m not sure that I’m who I was before Just fake it You’ll make it I know what to say I trusted you but I can’t see it written in the sky Don’t fake it You’ll make it I know what to say I trusted you but I’m not safe assured of what I’m looking for Twenty and four Twenty and four

CeeDee Lamb 03:01
I starved until I saw myself Like I had never dreamed I saw something I thought I’d never see It put me off It felt so wrong Then a sudden Tugging on the dusty strings There a mad dog, wild And running off his leash He wanders off, It all feels wrong, somehow So out of reach It all feels wrong somehow so far from me It all feels wrong somehow so out of reach
5.
Don't Mind 04:02
I said that I want to be near you You don’t have to test me I said that I want to be near you I don’t mind It’s like I need you now To figure out what to do But if you take too long It might turn off before the lights go on I said that I want to be near you You don’t have to try me I said that I don’t want to fear you I don’t mind at all It’s like I need you now To figure out what to do But if you take too long It might turn off before the lights go on and on It’s like I need you now To figure out what to do But if you take too long It might turn off before the lights go on and on I need you now To figure out what to do It’s like some way some how You figured out how to make it through to me I need you now I need you now
6.
Wasted Hours 03:32
Wasted hours never seem so long Passion always growing now its gone Sing it to me know that I won’t laugh No one to look up on your behalf You’ll find another day Try another way You know you can’t escape The messes that you make Try to calm down Feeling all around But when you’re up you’ll turn back to the places you have found Faded memories always dim so slow And then they jog you from so long ago What you wanted then it didn’t matter No one there to tell what would come after Find another day Try another way You know you can’t escape The messes that you make Try to calm down Feeling all around But when you’re up you’ll turn back to the places you have found
7.
Rust 03:06
You want me to be there But he doesn’ know That what makes you happy Is starting to show You want me to go out But I’m getting higher It’s a pleasure to know you But I’m so tired Don’t out the old the same Into the rust he came Until you forfeit your view of the summer sun away Until you forfeit your view of the summer sun away
8.
Miss Again Thought you were the one Distant images they comfort me Wondering what’s at stake in what I had Misappropriations in my life Never with a can or when I laugh You keep living up on Solstheim I will cut you out and walk away You keep living up on Solstheim I will take a bow and go away Miss Again Thought it was my time There’s some limitations in my mind Wonder if I’ve thrown them all away Set the pages, scratch the numbers, crack the code When you’re happy who or what’s to say You keep living up on Solstheim I will cut you out and walk away You keep living up on Solstheim Watch the weather take you for today Imitation life for me Escape from reality
9.
Wait Forever 03:16
I tried to make you see Would you like to listen to me? I cannot wait forever It is written in the sky You and I Would you like to talk to with me? Come clean of everything I cannot wait forever For forever only comes But once If we tried
10.
We sweat the show You don’t like to know What’s softly sifting, lifting Hours from the time Head up in lights Misplace a night There’s something drifting empty Restless on the air When its toxic Words are caustic I say I won’t But always crawl right back When its toxic Words are caustic I say I don’t But always come right back Say its alright By the candle light I’m softly sinking thinking Poison to myself We sweat the show I’d like to know What’s ever aching breaking Scattered cross your mind When it’s toxic Words are caustic I say I won’t But always crawl right back When it’s toxic Words are caustic I say I don’t But always come right back When you’re toxic Fears are caustic I say I can’t But always come right back

Lauds’ debut full-length Imitation Life is a lush, aural tapestry of blissed-out guitars against a backdrop of rhythmic tension woven by the five-piece, Wilmington, NC-based band. The lyrics of the 10 tracks ping-pong between anxious introspection and the search for fleeting bits of contentment in life, like the best empathetic, reflective autumnal rock of the second Brit invasion era. On songs like Wasted Hours, 24 and Rust, the elegantly anguished vocals wash over the listener like the waters of Cape Fear and the Atlantic Ocean that dominate the Wilmington landscape, evoking the “post-surf stupor” that songwriters J. Holt Evans lll and Mckay Glasgow feel after a day riding its waves.

Yet, Imitation Life is no beach record, not directly anyway. The ten songs don’t lean into surf rock, for example, but instead take sonic and thematic inspiration from acts across the pond. It’s a blend of the brooding melodicism of The Cure, the shoegaze of Ride or Slowdive, the atmospherics of Siouxsie and the Banshees and the wall of sound created by two lead guitars that features most prominently in work by the likes of The Chameleons. And this debut LP from Lauds stands on the shoulders of those giants, channeling a certain dark-edged slice of life and adding notably rich compositions to the jangly dreampop branch of the musical lexicon.

Lauds formed in the late 2010s not as a musical kinship of longtime friends, though the collaboration has grown into one during its short tenure. Instead, it was a chance meeting – or meetings, really – that brought Evans and Glasgow together in the humble home studio operated by Evans’ father. It was there at Plugpoint Studios in Wilmington, where Glasgow’s folk band recorded its album, that the two were introduced while Glasgow was working on some demos. Thereafter, Evans and Glasgow shared demos – Glasgow, stuff that didn’t mesh well with his other band and Evans, material he had noodled around with since grad school – and bonded over a shared affinity for upbeat, catchy guitar indie rock. Lauds was born as a vehicle for that, a playground for experimenting with soundscapes that included reverb-heavy guitars, echoey vocals and a pulsing rhythm section.

Thus far, that work has made Lauds a staple of the Port City live music scene and produced three singles and two EPs over the last three years. Imitation Life is half an amalgam of the heavy hitters from those previous releases and half new material. Together, they make an album that is an escape into a guitar-focused creation of Evans’ and Glasgow’s design. The opener, Parallel, kicks off the LP with a sparse jangle and propulsive drum beat like a clattering roller coaster car clicking up its initial ascent before the big drop. It is bookended at the end of the flipside with Misplace a Night, a cathartic exhale of an outro to the record. “I think it’s about feeling warm and safe holding someone you care about the next morning,” says Evans. “You still have the feelings of anxiety and regret but they’re overwhelmed by a feeling of peace and belonging.” In between, songs like Wasted Hours draw a direct line back to The Cure. Somehow features some of the most up-front vocals on the record and interspersed with a guitar part that moves up the fretboard and back again. “It’s about the beginning of a relationship when you are infatuated with someone,” Glasgow describes. “The lyric ‘blinded’ refers to that sort of willful fog that covers you when attraction and reciprocated feelings flood you.” Another new cut, 24, showcases a haunting keyboard line that chases along throughout the song like the long shadow of self doubt that Evans describes overcoming in the vocal track.

In the end, it is that dichotomy that drives Imitation Life; an upbeat melange of shimmery vocals, multiple interlocking guitar parts, jaunty basslines and motorik-laden drums with a flourish of keys on the side set against themes touching on the anxiety of growing into your own. That may seem like a mismatch of component parts, but it works here. Lauds clearly nod to their British forebears, but carve a niche all their own on this, their debut.
